This year I was given the opportunity to work with Jeremiah, Catherine and the whole Marcasa clan. These guys are such a great group. I love how Jeremiah and Catherine put so much detail into everything in the store. I've learned they have a counter made from sheet metal; previously used to cook Keebler Elf cookies, a cabinet that was used in movie productions and a park-ranger-truck green wall in back (being tested for a public wall). I've also seen the same attention paid to detail with their clients (whom, from what I can tell, often become friends). Their store always seems to have a fresh look with items that are chosen, not just for Billings clients, but to pull Billings fashion-forward. So, yeah, it's been a while. It's interesting the different roads photography takes you. This year I've photographed travels, weddings, bikers, families, homeless men, friends, musicians, food, animals, clothing and cloud shapes. I want to photograph everything. I want to understand the relationship between still and movement and become a fluent translator. Some days it's maddening to move so slow, other days it's maddening that you feel everything is coming at you in a single day. My boarders are are buried and I have to trample them many times before I find them. As I manage what is, I'm reformatting and looking forward to starting again.

Life is really a series of moments. Our perspective on those moments meter our happiness. There will always be pain, loss and tears... but there are also these moments that are so easily overlooked, overshadowed by schedules and to-do lists. There seems to be some essence of immortality in photography. Perhaps that's what draws me. There are times like these that are normal, real and beautiful. There is no glitter, no backdrop, no lighting; just life, a camera and I also happened to be there.

The Journey to 9/11

"She was the kind of person everyone liked" Nita told me about her old roommate and friend. Nita and her friend, who we'll call Anna, were both airline attendants. Anna was working on one of the planes when it hit the World Trade Center on 9/11. It's been nearly ten years since Nita's dared to venture to the heart of the city, fearing the pain would break her completely. She's fought panic attacks and heartbreak, but today she won. Through crowded New York street-ways, tourists and taxis; she walked silently with intent. Not even her newly fractured ankle or myself (the lingering tourist) slowed her down. Getting there didn't exactly ease her mind, but released her external fear. The loss of Anne still hurts, but it helps to remember.

For me, the experience humanized a far away tragedy. Nita told me details only flight attendants knew; of how these brave pilots and attendants made many attempts to stop the course of that day. How they stopped fearing for themselves and started fighting for the rest of us. If any good were to come of this, I would hope that we would choose to live lives worth their saving. Our hearts still brake for them.

It's 2:30am in Philadelphia right now and it seems like the only available time to blog. Philly is beautiful. I love the the mixture of architecture; old world+modern+urban. The resources that were poured into these buildings, bridges and even tombstones in the late 1800's is so impressive. It's as though these carved a voice into existence. So much more, I need to rest up for New York:)

It's always exciting to watch friends go through the process of having their first child. There's this anticipation that's incomparable. It's a process that seems to drag on for an eternity with great wonderment at every turn. It's a chapter of question marks and learning, met in the end with an unconditional love with the unforeseen force of a brick wall. I never believed in love at first sight until my son was born. I look forward to seeing my friends Josh and Jenna in their new lives, thrown completely upside-down and inside out by son and loving every minute. Congrats to you both, I can't wait to meet him!

This was one of my favorite weddings last year. I think it was a combination of friends and family from all over the world and a sense of personal strength from Nita. Nita and Eddy were married at my folk's place, Yellowstone River Lodge. The weather teased us with a little rain, but it only made for better skies. The day and the people were amazing and I felt completely blessed to be part of it.

Winter Wonderland

Before the Holiday Rush, I had the pleasure of spending a little time with the Hersel family. Where most kids might have little patience for the cold snow, Brycen jumped in with enthusiasm! I love how children have the capability to carry you back to the wonderment of life's simple pleasures, like snow;) Admittedly, it's been a while since I've been thankful for snow. In photography, one is often hired for their perspective. The irony is; my perspective is inspired by them. Thanks for the reminder Brycen!

I had the pleasure of spending some time today with Fred, Tara and their two sweet little girls; Sophia and Ella. I was greeted with the nostalgic smells of holiday baking and was even sent home with chocolate-covered pretzels! Generally speaking, I have a difficult time getting into the Holiday Spirit. Christmas season stresses me out, I tend to get on board last minute. But at the Barthel's, Christmas was in full-swing and somewhat irresistible with the smells of ginger-bread, Christmas lights and the snow softly falling outside. Yep, I believe the Barthel family is personally responsible for moving me a full five notches closer to feeling the joy of the season. Thanks for that ;)

I can't tell you how great it is to see a man smitten over his son before he can even lay eyes on him. Shayla said that her son responded a lot to his daddy's voice. I was excited to deliver Shayla's pictures, but was upstaged by her delivery:) I felt honored to be among the first to hold little Christian on his first full day of life. While at the hospital, I also got to see some more friends who had just delivered a baby boy. There was baby-holding and there was picture-taking. I think my camera may still carry that new-baby-smell:)

I got the call on Monday and left for Bozeman on Tuesday.
My heart and mind racing and repeating;
Why?

My cousin, Jo Ann, grew up on a ranch in Coalstrip, MT. She's as tough as nails with a heart of gold. As little girls we would ride horses on Montana plain-lands and seek adventure in abandoned homesteads. We would spend our days casting blueprints for our lives; deciding on wedding details and how many children we'd have and talking about how they would be the best of friends...
just like us.

I stopped the car just outside her place, that's where I lost it. It hit me like some unforeseen flood. The reality of what I was about to experience tugged and pulled at the scar tissue of my own loss. It had been 8 years since having lost my own daughter to SIDS. There are certain things I keep locked deep inside and this was screwing with the lock and key.

Jo Ann and I were treasure hunting in, what was left of a homestead, next to her house, when we found bundles of letters. The letters were between two lovers during WWII. We ran to our moms, our translators, to learn of our latest treasure. They shared with us what they could, then opted to preserve our innocence with the rest. Later that day, while sitting in that old sod home, it felt different. This house suddenly had names and history. Where are they? And why has this place fallen in on its self, leaving so much behind.

I gathered myself and robotically closed the car door and entered her house, past strangers on couches and strangers in the kitchen to the room where it had all begun. She looked up, saw me, embraced me and we wept.

Monday afternoon Jo Ann was multitasking, as we mothers do. Her 11-month-old, Stetson, was getting his bath. She went back and forth from child to child, washing clothes, removing outgrown clothes to make room new ones, back and forth and in and out from room to room. All it was, was a moment and Stetson was gone. I thought immediately of how many times that so easily mirrored my life; cleaning the room across the hall, checking dinner on the stove, etc. This could have been me, this could have been any of us. Why her? Why now?

A moment like that is like a black hole in your heart, threatening to swallow you whole. I began to think of that house that, at one time held that couple's hopes and dreams, then falling in on its self.

But if you were to think that would be her fate, then you don't know her like I do. You haven't seen the girl who could out work any ranch hand around, the girl who could work a stud horse into submission to ride, the girl who could rope, tackle and brand a calf. We were not designed for failure. Though we have lost a significant potion of ourselves and can not, at times, see through the pain of our losses. We will continue to stand up, dust ourselves off and begin moving again.
Philippians 4:13

Today we leave for Bozeman to attend the funeral that will take place tomorrow of an 11-month-old little boy. There is nothing right about this, no one should lose a child. It will be a good-bye of many clinched-fists. But we'll do it together and somehow manage to find some peace at the end of ourselves.

Please keep Marty, Jo Ann and Penelope in your prayers.

There's nothing better than the long summer days of your childhood. They were carefree and full of imaginative adventure. Neighborhoods seem to come alive with children moving from one back yard to the next. I remember exploring the hills near my home, with my older brothers, looking for snakes and picking wildflowers for my mom.
I loved photographing Maxine. It felt like I was looking through the glass window of her imaginative world...

Sunday nights I head to OTL in the evening. I order my mint mocha in a paper cup then find my way to comfortable armed chair. I open my Mac, then go through the past week visually uploading and editing my images. I enjoy the the random sounds of the coffee grinder, groups of people philosophizing themselves, each other,.. life. If there's a break in the conversations, you might hear the Irish band practicing in the back room. You may not be able to buy happiness, but you can buy a little momentary contentment housed in a paper cup.
